Santa Ana's Michelada Guide
Explore Diverse Flavors of the Iconic Mexican Cocktail with Curated Local Creations.
If you’re new to the world of Micheladas, here’s the scoop: In its most basic form, the drink is a Mexican lager dialed up with tart lime juice and served in a chilled, salt-rimed glass. Creative bartenders have been playing with the formula for years, adding assorted sauces, chiles, and spices.
Credit for the drink's invention is usually given to a man named Michel Ésper, who frequented Club Deportivo Potosino in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, in the 1960s. Ésper started ordering his beer with lime, salt, ice, and a straw in a cup called a "chabela.” Curious club members began asking for the drink as "Michel's lemonade,” which was shortened over time to "michelada."
Today, Santa Ana restaurants and bars offer their own versions of the michelada, from housemade michelada mix to mocktail options with Topo Chico or assorted fruit juices.
